Janjina Travel Guide

Janjina, uniting 5 tiny settlements into a single village, is set at the bottom of Gradina Mount in the central part of the peninsula. The warm mild climate and the fertile soil that are characteristic of this region of Croatia make it a perfect place to grow olives and vine. To begin your Janjina travel you have to go 90 km from the Dubrovnik airport.

The hill of Gradina is of special interest because of the ruins of an Illyrian fortress dating from the 5th century BC. In the 14th century the inhabitants of the Dubrovnik Republic founded the first two of Janjina's modern settlements, with 3 more following in the next two hundred years. Seafaring was very important with their residents and some of the 19th century seamen's houses are still there to be seen during holidays in Janjina.

Tourist attractions. The most prominent historical monuments to look round while on a Janjina travel are the St Blaise's church and the Rector's palace built in 1465. Another picturesque church of St Stephen traced as early as 1222 and located next to the 1th century Roman summer residence.

Festivals, cultural events and restaurants. Gourmets are pleased with their Janjina holidays thanks to its dainty gastronomic offer focusing on fish and shellfish cooked with high quality olive oil at the Donmanoeta restaurant. Your summer Janjina travel will be still more enjoyable if you visit the local folklore events, music and dance parties.

Beaches. Although Janjina is placed in the interior the nearby settlements of Drace and Sreser located 2 and 3 km away have wonderful coves with sunny beaches and inviting transparent sea.

Active vacations. This is also an opportunity to go fishing or enrich your hiking holidays in Janjina's woodland with yacht and boat trips as the Drace harbour has its own marina.
