Pirovac Travel Guide

Pirovac is a town with a population of 1500 located at the farthest west of the Sibenik-knin county. The popularity of Pirovac travel is mainly due to the vicinity of the national parks of Croatia (Krka and Kornati), natural endowments, and numerous attractions.

The town is connected to such great centres as Sibenik, Zadar, Trogir and Split by the Adriatic Highway.

Known as "Zlosela", the town was first mentioned in 1298 as the property of the Subic family. The settlement itself was set up in the 15th century and consisted of refugees who fled from the Turks. The village was acquired by a nobleman Petar Draganic, a member of the Venetian fleet. Because of the Turkish threat which increased after the capitulation of Bosnia in 1463, Draganic built a fortress with embankments and houses for inhabitants.

Tourist attractions. Many precious cultural and historical monuments grace Pirovac, including ancient city walls (1505), the church of St. Juraj (1506), the Gothic sarcophagus (1447), a parish church of Gospa Karmelska (1506). If you go to the island of St. Stjepan during your Pirovac travel, visit the remains of the Franciscan monastery (1511), the remains of Roman settlement. You also won’t regret going to the island of Murter, the national parks of Croatia, the historical cities of Dalmatia that lie in the immediate vicinity.

Festivals and cultural events. There are events which attract tourists to this place in addition to its ancient charm. The 16th of April is the day when the town celebrates the the feast day of Our Lady of Karmen. Another important holiday is the feast day of St. George, patron saint of Pirovac on April 23. Also don't miss Fishermen nights festival when you can taste the traditional cuisine, enjoy Dalmatian spiritual music concerts performed by "klape", see the famous donkey races, soccer tournament, etc.

The coves Sitnica, Vrulje, Vrilo also have lovely pebble beaches. Those who want to improve their health on their Pirovac holidays should go to Makirina, a natural swimming beach with medicinal peloid mud, which is situated on the south of Pirovac Bay. The mud from this site is the best in Croatia.

Active vacations. The ideal place for playing beach volleyball during your Pirovac holidays is the beach "Lolic". Those who like tennis should visit a landscaped tennis court "Miran". Fishermen should go to the lake Vrana, which is rich in pike, catfish and carp. Indoor football is extremely popular here as the Pirovac is the Dalmatian center of this kind of sport.
