Karlobag Travel Guide

Karlobag is a small idyllic tourist oasis with 42 km long Riviera, which lies at the foot of Velebit Mountains, on the way from Senj to Starigrad. It is a perfect place for budget travelers who want to see more of Croatia. Plitvice Lakes, Paklenica, Pag Island are all situated nearby.

Once the town was called "Vegia" by Pliny and Ptolemy, but was destroyed during migration of nations and then rebuilt by the Croats in the 7th c., who called it Skrisa. Karlobag, founded in the 14th c. by Charles IV, a Roman Emperor, was first documented in 1387 under the name of "Bag".

Tourist attractions. There are some unavoidable attractions in the town, such as the Capuchine Monastery, the ruins of medieval fortress known as Fortica and the church of Saint Charles of Borromeo (17th c.). In addition, you are strongly recommended to go to the nearby village of Smilijan to visit the Museum of Nikola Tesla, a world-famous Croatian scientist.

Beaches. Near the Hotel Zagred you can find perfectly equipped pebble beach with concrete terraces, it is the biggest beach in Karlobag. The town beach Velinac covered with pebble is located in the eastern part of the settlement. In addition, there is uncountable amount of cozy bays and coves stretching along the Riviera suitable for sunbathing and swimming.

Restaurants. For such a small settlement, Karlobag has a great number of good restaurants, bistro and cafes. The most popular of them are restaurant Katarina, Konoba Amfora, Pizzeria OK, restaurant Bag.

Festivals and cultural events. Art enthusiasts will be happy to attend the annual festival called International Painting Colony, which is visited by many artists from Croatia and all around the globe. Young travelers have no chance of getting bored during Karlobag travel since the town is situated near Pag Island, where you can visit Zrce beach, which is well-known for wild parties.

Active vacations. Active travelers can choose between various sports activities during their Karlobag holidays. Climbing, hiking, cycling, aquatic sports, bowling, mini-golf are all available there. Adrenaline junkies can enjoy kayaking and rafting on the river Gacka.
