Tisno Travel Guide

Tisno is a marvellous destination to visit and a fantastic starting point if you plan to see more of the Murter Island. The drawbridge in Tisno connects the island with the mainland.

The town was first mentioned in 1474. It was named Tisno ("narrow") because the town occupies the narrowest point of the channel which separates island Murter from the mainland. In period of the French reign (1806 - 1813) it used to be the centre of local government.

Tourist attractions. Places to see during your Tisno holidays abound here. It would definitely be a great loss if you leave unvisited the parish church of St. Spirit's (1548) and a Romanesque church of St. Martin (13th century) situated on the hill of Ivinj. However, the church of Our Lady of Caravaggio (18th century) must be the most important in your list of Tisno attractions. It is a votive church of the Italian family of Gelpis.

Festivals and cultural events. The 26th of May is the day when pilgrims from all over Dalmatia travel to Tisno to participate on the feast day of Our Lady of Caravaggio. Another event which can not be missed is the traditional Donkey Race that is organized every summer and festival "Tisno summer". Also, when the tourist season ends, the festival "Fishermen's party" is held.

Restaurants. Any Tisno travel guide will list some of the town's finest restaurants: Broscica for black risotto with grilled steak as house specialty, Carmen, Toni and Ferali restaurants for local and Mediterranean cuisine based on fish, Gina for excellent sea food specialties served with the best wines of Croatia.

Beaches. Tisno is endowed with spectacular beaches, including clothing optional ones. There is a nice small naturist beach behind the chapel Sveti Andrija, the major advantage of which is that it is hidden under the coolness of the trees. Another stupendous place for those who prefer privacy during their Tisno holidays is Jazine beach. It is rather developed, with showers, a bar, chair rental, a court for sand volleyball, a small shop.

Active vacations. Tisno is a fabulous spot for whatever activity you prefer. Those who like walking or riding a bike can enjoy numerous tracks along the seaside and in the hills. Those who want to make their Tisno holidays more dynamic can choose from a great number of possibilities such as water skiing, jet-skiing, bungee jumping or paragliding. If you go to the diving center Tramonto, you will be shown some of the best diving locations in Croatia.
