Drvenik Travel Guide
Drvenik is a coastal village in the southern Dalmatia, Croatia. It is located in two bays (Gornja Vala and Donja Vala) between Biokovo Mountain and the seashore in nearly 24 km southeast of Makarska.
Drvenik is an important transportation center as it has the ferry pier and car ferry landing for the islands Hvar and Korcula. This small village of about 480 residents provides over 1600 beds for the tourists in private sector, along with hotels, villas, pensions for any taste and budget. It was firstly mentioned in the 13th century. The remains of Fort Drvenik are among the most valuable historical monuments in the Makarska region. Church of St. George is situated under the Plano mount in Gornij Drvenik. This gothic church was built in the 15th century and since then it was rebuilt several times. In the end of 19th century the church appeared too little for the growing population and was expanded in 1887. The church's walls contain the old gravestones, its front wall is decorated with daedal window of rose with eight petals and the ancient church-tower with two bells is placed at the top. After the earthquake in 1962 the population moved to the seaside and needed new church. That's why the modern Church of Our Lady was built in 1967.
