Podgora, a small fishing village is located in the very heart of Dalmatia on the picturesque Makarska Riviera. Nearly 8 km separate Podgora from Makarska, and little less than 70 km from Split. This hospitable place is fairly called one of the most attractive places in Croatia. The village was named Podgora (meaning "under the mountain") due to the Biokovo Mountain that beetles over this settlement.

The history of this place is rather long and interesting. The earliest mentions about Podgora date the year 1571, when the Venice took this village under its cover after their winning in Lepant battle against Turks. Many buildings and just few tombstones are preserved from that time. Till the second half of 20th century Podgora was mainly located upper in the Biokovo Mountain. In 1962 the settlement has got through a great earthquake and its population moved closer to the seaside.
Tourist attractions. Unfortunately, some of priceless historical monuments were seriously damaged during the earthquake. Among the most precious cultural and historical monuments for your Podgora travel we recommend Ancient Church of St. Tekla, Church of All Saints (1764), Chapel of Holy heart of Jesus (1804) and remains of big Tower on the Roscici hill constructed for defense against the Turks.
